A desk, a table, and countertop may all look clean but the surfaces may be contaminated with bacteria waiting for the opportunity to contaminate food and possibly lead to illness. Disinfectants are substances that reduce the amount of microorganisms on a surface to a level that is considered safe. Since bacteria is microscopic, it is impossible to see with the naked eye.

When a surface is cleaned, all of the dirt and debris is removed using the appropriate chemicals under the recommended conditions. Disinfectants take cleaning a surface one step further. When you disinfect a surface you remove all the dirt, soil, and bacteria so that the number of germs is reduced to such a level that the spread of disease is unlikely and is safe from a public health point of view. The most powerful disinfectants work as both a fungicide and virucide. Fungicides are used to kill or inhibit fungi or fungal spores. Virucides specifically target bacteria that can grow into harmful spreading viruses.

Viruses, colds and even deadly diseases have been clinically proven to be transmitted by un-sanitized hands and surfaces. It is important to protect yourself, your family, your clients, and your business. Read and learn about proper protocol for cleaning and disinfecting a surface, and remember consider the product you are using and how safe it is for you and the environment. Reading the label is very important when you’re deciding on a cleaning product. Many of the products that are capable of disinfecting and killing bacteria properly may also be very hazardous and therefore should be used with caution.

Brighton USA provides green cleaning products which are both safe for the environment and the users of the products. Look through our catalog to learn more about products

Today, you can see more buildings being re-designed to become eco-friendly. More facilities managers are looking<ins cite="mailto:Hardley%20Jeannite" datetime="2011-11-03T10:48"> </ins>to incorporate greener cleaning methods; engineers and architects are working together to design buildings to earn LEED certification.

A LEED certified building is a finalized construction that is designed to reduce negative environmental impacts of buildings and improve the health and well-being of the individuals who occupy them. <del datetime="2011-11-03T10:25">
</del>The benefits of LEED certification start with proof to your clients, competitors, and yourself that you have made a positive impact with the design of the building. Secondly, there are a numerous government (state and local) benefits that come with achieving this certification.

The certification program requires that all LEED certified buildings use eco-friendly cleaning products. One of the most important products for cleaning these buildings is eco friendly sanitizer. Sanitizers have become suitable for cleaning a large variety of surfaces. Sanitizing a surface every day is important especially for flu season. Traditional sanitizers leave behind toxins that affect breathing in close spaces.

The goal for cleaning a LEED building is to reduce the chemicals and toxins that affect everyone’s health. In addition, these chemicals and toxins can be harmful to the beautiful building finishes and indoor air quality. Problems that may occur with dangerous chemicals in traditional cleaners include asthmatic symptoms, skin irritation, and damaged kidneys by specific metal polishes; so move the traditional cleaning products away and decrease the risk of illness.

Remember: a major step towards becoming LEED certified is purchasing green cleaning products for your building. Fulfill all of your green cleaning needs by checking out ourCatalog.

With the challenge of cleaning after a flood, several factors may be over-looked and may lead to long-term health risks. After a flood, indoor air quality is not only an issue that leads to bad scent, but also chemicals being trapped into a closed area can lead to bacteria in the lungs. Failure to reduce moisture and humidity can lead to an increase in several micro-organisms. Things such as bacteria and mold can be hazardous if overlooked while residing within the damaged area. This may cause new triggers in allergic reactions, changes in breathing patterns, and unexplained disease.

With cleaning, there is a higher need to reduce the chemical in-take within a certain area. Better cleaning techniques need to be used when taking into consideration the damage to your carpets, floors, and walls. For example, using carpet cleaners with polar solvents is not only effective but also safer than using cleaners with non-polar solvents because it reduces the amount of oil and grease in the liquid of the carpet cleaner. Non-polar solvents can keep the carpet semi-moist, which leads to mold within the carpet. Also, when looking to control odors, look into enzyme bacteria solutions to control malodors over using aerosol cans.

During late September of 2011, Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, made the official announcement for the pilot year of Green Ribbon Schools to be set for 2012. For the summer months beforehand the US Department of Education was vigorously working on creating the specific guidelines and criteria for this program. The goal of Green Ribbon Schools is to recognize green schools that have strong environmental impact, are energy efficient, provide a healthy environment within the school, and offer eco friendly education to students.

The Green Ribbon Program is beneficial to the environment and the health of students and faculty. Improvements in schools facilities save money and create new jobs within the school. Also, natural resources are conserved and students are given the opportunity to experience and participate in a green economy. Furthermore, students will also learn healthy behaviors, which result in increased standards in nutrition, fitness, attendance, and productivity. Now that we understand the benefits, how are schools considered for this award?

In order for schools to be considered for the Green Ribbon Award they must first be nominated by their states chief education officer. From there, state education officers evaluate each school nominated based on their criteria and guidelines. Next, the Department Of Education further evaluates the top nominees. Each state is allowed to have one recipient of the Green Ribbon Award. The winners will receive national and local recognition and may even be awarded private financial assistance.

This spring, schools across the nation will work intently on creating an environmentally friendly facility in hopes of being named a Green Ribbon School. All participating schools will reap the health and educational benefits of this fantastic program. The Green Ribbon Program hopes that they will have some tough decisions to make when choosing the awards recipients this spring.

The light bulb industry is going to see some interesting changes in the next few years with the implementation of the Energy Independence and Security Act. This bill that was passed in 2007 will take effect starting in 2012 and will call for light bulbs to be 25 to 30% more efficient. What this all really means is that all light bulbs will need to be replaced with the newer Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs. These bulbs produce significantly less energy and will help business meet the requirements that everyone will have to follow next year. By changing to CFL bulbs the country is estimated to save around $13 billion of energy[i] but the question remains, how can your company tap into those savings?

Brighton provides an energy efficient lighting service for New York and the Tri-state area that can easily help the transition to the new light bulbs. The best part of these new bulbs is that they last immensely longer than incandescent ones, which will in turn save thousands in energy costs every year. There have not been many changes since Thomas Edison created the incandescent bulb over 130 years ago, but CFL bulbs last around 10 times longer and use 75% less energy than the outdated incandescent.[ii] Brighton is ready to help make this transition by offering a free audit of the lighting in your business and will go even further to then give a projected savings report. The change in lighting is coming next year so let Brighton help seamlessly save the time and money that you deserve.

Many organizations claim that their products are better or safer because they are “eco friendly cleaning products.” However, what proof do these people have to back up their statements? Sure a

business owner can make a claim on his or her website or get an “expert” in the field. However, the only way to truly know if a product is safe is to have Green Labels or Seals of approval. Brighton’s products have the Green Seal Label, one of the oldest and most trusted labels in the business. The Green Seal was one of the very first to start labeling things green, starting in 1989, and it has grown to have some of the very best scientific research to ensure that the products baring their seal are the safest on the market.

Envirox is another great example, having labels such as the Healthy Schools Campaign and EcoLogo Certifications. These certifications show that we endorse products that are safe enough to be used in schools and around our children, as well as having substantial testing to demonstrate their safety. We only want to sell the safest, most useful products to all our customer’s and we want that to be known to anyone who sees the Brighton logo.

Besides the obvious reasons of having a product that is safer for the environment, there are countless benefits for businesses to use these commercial cleaning products. A poll conducted by Harris Interactive found 84% of all adults 18 and older would prefer to use green cleaning products to non-green certified ones. This shows that most people would not only like cleaning products to have a positive impact on the environment, but there is a market for their repeat business as well. Utilizing eco friendly cleaning products creates benefits that most people wouldn’t even think about. Employees will stay healthier because these products have fewer chemicals in their formulas to cause allergic reactions; they also have little to no carcinogens making cancer from these products basically non-existent. Also, green
cleaning products don’t eat away at wood, chrome, or fade upholsteries like many non-green products will, making your office last longer and look better. The list is seemingly endless, and with the proof in the labels your business can flourish by using green commercial cleaning products.

With football season, MLB World Series, and Dancing with Stars on television, everyone is throwing away garbage from all the events they attend during the day. You want to make sure the school children have enough room to throw away their trash from school. You want to make sure the office have a large enough recycling bin for all their empty soda bottles and Red bull cans. How much of a disaster would it be if you walk into your property and all the trash is on the floor? People do not like sitting around filth and bad smells can lead to less people around your property. Whether you are a restaurant owner or an office building manager, the people who are in your building will need to throw their trash out somewhere.

Brighton USA has put together a little guide to helping you select the right trash receptacle. When you are done reading this, check out our Catalog and see if we have the right product for you:

Here is a guide to choosing the right trash receptacles:

1.Proper Liner Type:

There are three types of liners: low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, and Super Hexene.
That sounds pretty complicated! I can make it simple for you.

High-Density:
This is the typical choice for office, restroom, and throwing away paper products.
It is also three times stronger than ordinary polyethylene liners

Linear Low Density:
Low Density: Great choice for throwing away trash with sharp objects

Super Hexene: This is the maximum strength, puncture and tear resistance linear. It is also stronger than Linear Low Density. This is used to throw away larger weight with higher weight.

2.) Size:
The capacity is usually printed on the container. You should have 3 to 4 inches overhang on the trash receptacle. The size of the receptacle should be appropriate for the setting you are in. For instance you may not want a massive receptacle inside your small office; it might smell pretty awful in there.

3.) How much weight the linear should hold?
After deciding on the type and the size, you should consider how much weight the linear should hold.
The weight the linear depends on the environment you are setting your trash receptacle.

4.) Location, location, location!
I really stress the importance of where you place your receptacle. The same receptacle in a high school lunchroom shouldn’t be used in a stadium. The amount of people and traffic going through a stadium is very different than a high school lunchroom. Be sure to take this into high consideration before making your final decision.

Also a great place to make your final decision would be by looking at your catalog for all your green cleaning needs: Catalog
